Zany Crosstables (1)

As I said, chessgames.com (CG) doesn’t allow nice tablular data. But now I remember, wordpress isn’t 100% easy either, and so I again had to change themes (sunspot was as table friendly as expound).

I have a crosstable from SCID that I want to display – let’s try using the code tag:

I should have been able to just “cut and paste” the table in, but I still have to monkey around with spaces to get the table data to line up. At least the font was right!

The data comes from a PGN of the 1987 Subotica Interzonal FIDE tournament. I normalized the data by deleting all the Kavalek games (he dropped out for health reasons after 7 rounds – it’s my understanding that FIDE nullified those games). Then, using SCID, I normalized the player names (a subject for a latter post). After that I need only press one button, and voila, you get the crosstable above.

Quickly then, I like the above format despite a quibble or two. First, the title, age and country are easy to read, and informative. Maybe I’d prefer IM vs. im and GM vs. gm, but as I said, that’s a quibble. Later, here or on CG I’ll talk more about different crosstable formats, and present a couple of other zany ideas for formatting.

For right now, I just wanted to present a SCID crosstable in all its glory.

(Aside- Please note that SCID has other formatting options that should be mentioned – i.e. the table can be sorted by name or rating as well as standing. Other options exist too, e.g. the columns can be labeled by number instead of letter, etc. The above is the standard default.)
