Wijk ann Zee 1973 (Hoovogen 35th)

If you are interested in the full heritage of the Hoogoven->Corus->Tata Steel series of January tournaments held in Beverijk->Wijk ann Zee, then you must vist this “official” link for the full history:

http://www.tatasteelchess.com/history/tournament

For this post I am focusing on the Wijk aan Zee 1973 (Hoogoven 35th).

Here is the cross table from a download of a <CG> collection by suenteus po 147 after normalizing Site and Event.

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1011767

Suenteus po 147 has put all the pairings/round numbers on the collection page, but this information hasn’t made its way into the PGN.  The round numbers of many of the games are (somewhere!) in the PGN, but not all. So, his having done all that work doesn’t really help anyone after they download the tournament collection onto their local pc, without them having to do a lot more work by hand after the fact, in order to update the missing round numbers, game by game.

(You’ll hear this complain from me so long as <CG> doesn’t get the PGN normalized properly).

There are several games dated 1973.01.??, not surprising since the tournament is always held in January. What is more interesting is the one game dated 1973.01.13 (Donner — Planinec R2). OK, here is the table without any additional manipulation:

Why is only this one game dated? Well, look at this photograph from the Dutch National Archive:

http://www.gahetna.nl/en/collectie/afbeeldingen/fotocollectie/zoeken/weergave/detail/tstart/0/q/zoekterm/tal/f/Persoons_instellingsnaam/Tal%2C%20M./start/8

The Dutch Archive gives the date of the above photograph as 1973.01.17.

You can see that I stumbled upon this by looking for Tal photographs. Tal actually won this tournament, and it marked his first tournament outside the USSR after his last appearance at Wijk aan Zee in 1968.

The Tal ’73 photograph is consistently dated as 1973-01-16, since it is taken from R1 (“eerste ronde”). Indeed, Planinec — Tal (R1), did have Tal playing Black. The entire meta-data information for the photograph is given as follows:

All three photographs can be found at the link given for the Donner-Planinec tag.

(Note: Planinec is sometimes spelt Planinc, I follow SCID’s normalization, which I believe is mostly conformant with FIDE’s spellings).
