Hoogovens 55th Knockout – Wijk aan Zee 1993

(This is preliminary – all subject to verification)

Sorting out the Hoogovens 55th Tournament is a bit confusing – since this is the first year that a Knockout / Swiss combo tournament format was used. The number of entrants in the GM section was twenty-four. The first round saw sixteen players engage in eight elimination matches, with the remaining eight players getting a bye. The format, until the final match round, involved a combination of two classic games followed by double rounds of rapid games. Until the final match round, the knockout rounds would continue until one player took at least a 1.5 point lead.

The easiest way for me to think about this is that a player could win two games in a row, or get a win and a draw in two games to win the match. In other words, two draws, or each player winning one out of the two games would continue play for at least two more games.

The final round match involved the best score out of four games. But I’m not sure of tie-break rules since I’ve deduced all of these rules forensically, i.e. from the actual games played.

With that introduction, here is the knockout crosstable which I got from SCID, using MillBase as the source of the games. (I used the Tata Steel site to determine the order and result of the games within each match, but have yet to check down to the level of detail of matching up the actual moves.

62 games: +33 =23 -6

(Usual caveats about SCID's determination of player nationality applies.
Also, Lembit Oll was awarded the GM title in 1992 (wiki), which SCID omitted. It was edited in.
The byes were also edited in, and the player ordering was edited from SCID, so that the winner is always on the left))

Karpov won the tournament, and Illescas Cordoba came in second.

I believe all the players knocked out during the elimination rounds then participated in a Swiss format tournament. But I’ve yet to investigate those games.
