Working Notes // Hoogovens 55th — Wijk aan Zee (1993)

Here are my working notes for both the Open and the Knockout tournaments in the Hoogovens 55th (1993) Tournament.

First, let me copy over <Paint My Dragons> valuable response from the <CG> forum:

Paint My Dragon: <Zanzibar> Pee soup? They couldn’t even afford pea soup that year?Aside from reams of narrative and annotated games, the factual stuff from the magazines can be summarised as [my comments in square brackets];Prizes included …
Karpov – 15,000 guilders first prize.
Illescas – 8,000 guilders as runner-up
Salov – 4,000 guilders as losing semi-finalist, plus another 8,000 for winning the Open!

Karpov’s shortest EVER loss occurred in round 2 (his first game against Christiansen and first game of the tournament, in 12 moves – he blundered a piece).

Nijboer finally gained his GM title [it’s not explained if this was due to making a norm or gaining the necessary Elo].

According to the author, the players liked the new format. Those losing in round one were obviously not overjoyed (but happier than they would have been going home). It was apparent that the further players got, the happier they became [presumably the result of some cash in pocket and a plus score to carry forward to the Open].

– (New In Chess 1993 No. 3 pp. 4-41 – Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam)

Format …
24 invited players for the knockout were divided into 3 groups – A, B and C. Group A were the seeded players, who got a bye to round two (Karpov, Gelfand, Shirov, Salov, I Sokolov, C Hansen, Piket, Nunn). Hence, first round contested between Groups B and C.

First round losers joined round 1 of the Open (a further 16 players participated at this point). The Open then grew to 38 at the conclusion (16 plus 22 from the KO).

Second round losers joined round 3 of the Open with a score of 2/3.

Third round losers joined round 5 of the Open with a score of 3.5/5.

Losing semi-finalists joined the Open with 5.5/8.

Standard play time limit – 2 games at 40 in 2 hrs, then 20 in 1 hour, then all moves in further 1 hour.

Rapid play off games (if tied at 1-1) – 2 games at 30 mins, then if still tied, pairs of games in 15 mins, until someone won.

Salov won the Open with 9/12, having been gifted a 5.5/8 start.

According to the author, the new format was, on balance, a great success.

Short takes wife and daughter and leave his business worries handled

Jeroen Piket will be the first part of the game experience. Then he

Physical discomfort will Short and Timman can not afford the coming
month. Donners adage: "A chess is never ill" has become a reality. The
timeouts are abolished. Only in the match for the world championship
is one left. Not so much for the fighting cocks themselves as to their
immediate environment. It could, for example, that a family member in
the room dies. As recently befell the uncle of Nikolic.

Donners adagium: "Een schaker is nooit ziek"
is werkelijkheid geworden.

Blast Furnace Chess Has Strong Occupancy

Velsen, Friday

"Come on." That was the thrust of the speech Frans Andriessen, former
vice-chairman of the committee of the European Community. At the time
he received the invitation to open the anniversary tournament He was
still in office. The fact that he has since been replaced by Hans van
den Broek made him at least easier to perform. Themselves of this
pleasant task.

Fifty-five blast furnace Chess Tournaments in a row. It's not nothing,
and the crowded hall of <Schouw te Velsen-Noord> testified to the
faithfulness of the tournament visitors, officials and players. That
faith is needed and will-be somewhat experienced as warming because of
course it is not amiss with Hoogovens anno 1993. Asked whether there
is a 56th edition is a painful silence. Safety net for companies that
have difficulties. And he proudly pointed to the European Coal and
Steel Community, the forerunner of the EG. So he covenant sense
(linked meaningfully) the opening of a chess tournament with big
politics, and before that he was also present.

Honestly "We have to maximize complicated lottery chosen to give you
it all really are fair impression," said Joop Haasbroek, chairman of
the tournament committee somewhat obscure. Complicated was the draw
for sure. Eight players are positioned, Boris Gelflan, Kurt Hansen of
Denmark, An-one referring to the economic recession. seems a kind of
cycle. In 1973/1974 there was talk of, as in 1982/1983 and it is ten
years later also the case. Andriessen highlighted the fact that there
still the European Community as Atoli Karpov from Russia, John Nunn
from England, the Netherlands Jeroen Piket, Valerie Valov from Russia,
Alexei Shirov of Latvia and Ivan Sokolov from Bosnia.

In this case "Placement" means that they do not have to play. The
first two parties Indeed, it is again a waste system, but just
something different than Inter Polis. In addition to these eight
players are invited sixteen, who took office in the first round
against each other. The winners of the two camps, which comprises the
first round (today and tomorrow), coming out in the next round, where
the eight seeded players are so join them. It is Monday afternoon. So
too can join Jeroen Piket, who at this point in Spain is with Jan
Timman.

Another novelty is the combination of the main tournament with an open
tournament "Hoogovens Open. This requires a further sixteen players
invited who face the losers of the first round. All ingenious and
promising, and in such an intricate design fits indeed a complicated
lottery. It was therefore wrong! Neglect of another governed by the
tournament rules (players with too high rating may not in the first
round against each other) was the pairing of Christiansen at Oll
disagree nor that of Korchnoi against Wolff. After the official draw
that was put right. Christiansen now playing against Korchnoi and Oll
against Wolff, and now everything is so fine.

Force

Already show that the tournament is certainly not deteriorated. Force
at the mention of these names Quite the contrary! The opening and
draw, which was dominated by Europe '93, was adorned by a piper from
Scotland and a Spanish couple, but just as much by playing along with
four of the top ten players in the world. There are rookies. The first
is Shirov, one of the coming men 'from the vast Russian or former
Russian Empire. Along with Kramnik (not participating) represent the
latest generation of chess guns. What Loek van Wely (the big man from
1992), Friso Nijboer (in Groningen so beautifully scored his GM norm)
and John van der Wiel (recent winner in a strong tournament in Baden)
do?  This waste can be pre-races say about little sensible. Jeroen
Piket? Rest to be. Standard-bearer of the Dutch brigade heavy task
upon him He has had an excellent year in 1992 chess, is currently
clearly Dutch second man and must therefore deliver. With extra
voltage so we look at the first round of which begins today at eleven
o'clock in the Moor in Wijk aan Zee. The draw for the first round
match of the tournament yesterday in Velsen yielded the following
results:

Lobron (DEU) - Van der Sterren (NED),
Nikolic (BOS) - Van Wely (NED),
    Akopian (ARM) - Nijboer (NED),
Azmaiparashvili (ARM) - Van der Wiel (NED),

Bad harbinger in Wijk aan Zee

DISTRICT SEA, Saturday's top tennis formula, which is now used in so
many chess tournaments, set all its own problems. Has its own
concerns. A defeat of Dutchman was always annoying in any chess
tournament on home soil whatsoever, but that defeat the harbinger of
premature shutdown ... it gets worse. That we saw in October in
Tilburg, the signs of it yesterday we saw back in Wijk aan Zee.

John van der Wiel example Azmaiparashvili played a match in which he
was from the beginning with their backs against the wall. Great
spatial preponderance of white players, but which do not exactly
exploited in the best way. He spent his advantage, although over to an
endgame, but when Van der Wiel tough and tenacious continued to
defend, there was at one time - nothing more to it. But right then
went wrong again, and in a long time, but the chance endgame black
player went under.

And Friso Nijboer went on. Akopian treated his king's Indian defense
quiet and somewhat annoying. He traded e 5, and thus took the greatest
stresses of the theorem. Nijboer - who likes to think of
short-initiative proposed to acquire all his intellect to serve. He
risked taking a few things, but was not exactly bad. Only those
clock...

Just when the time trouble began pinching, Akopian came with some
smart strategic ideas, which ultimately resulted in a pawn-profit
(after blundertje of Nijboer) and an easily won position. Applicable
also went black once again by his flag.

Those were two zeros for compatriots and Paul van der Sterren Dolf
against Eric Lobron the worst. That was an orthodox lady Gambit
entirely as Timriian and Short played in the first batch. At least
until the eleventh move. Lobron considered the proposition somewhat
differently and achieved considerable positional superiority.

"From that moment I did not have a good time, move more," said the
German afterwards. This meant that Van der Sterrens at was fully come,
and had a view of a draw or more. 29th-maneuver, he stepped into the
error and came in a late game just lost contact. Ladies, towers, but a
pawn less.  It went silent downhill. Very exciting was the draw
between Michael Adams and Julian Hodgson. A Sicilian, where White
spent a known pawn sacrifice, preponderance seemed to acquire, but
black knew the position and the hidden features of his hand. He
continued to stubbornly stand, even seemed to achieve dominance but
Adams sent in a precarious position draw combination. Without Hodgson
the corresponding queen sacrifice - followed by perpetual check - left
to prove, he gave the party immediately, but a draw.  A quality
affair.

Less emotion empire was the division points between Illescas and
Tukmakov (correct Tarrasch defense) and between Oll and Wolff. They
played a Mirraner-defense which, although high waves seemed to go, but
everything still remained within the beaten path.

Results of the first round:
    Oll (EST) - Wolff (USA)                     1/2 - 1/2,
    Illescas (ESP) - Tukmakov (UKR)             1/2 - 1/2,
    Nikolic (BOS) - Van Wely (NED)              1/2 - 1/2,
Akopian (ARM) - Nijboer (NED)               1-0,

Rus gives up after twelve convert match against Anatoly Karpov
Christiansen Huge blunder

DISTRICT SEA, Tuesday The tournament organization has done everything
to former world champion Anatoly Karpov to contract. After his
incredible chess blindness in his first appearance, however, there is
every chance that 'Tolja "immediately turns off the Hoogovens«

Karpov how this could happen is a big question. The Russian kleide may

Obstruction

The only Dutchman in the knockout matches Jeroen Piket. He had, like
every seeded player, free in the first round, which was a serious
obstacle to his countrymen. Piket, who has just returned from Spain
where he Timman second most, had yet to acclimatize. Against the
ever-combative Englishman Hodgson ran a defeat after mistakes in time
trouble. Himself Piket was very disappointed. He found that he had a
nice party had played at least close itself for the next match
therefore good chances increase.

Yet Julian Hodgson should not be underestimated. This young master was
in his youth a great promise, similar to Nigel Short. Through his
lavish lifestyle he has only his talent not know fully develop. Now,
however, he drove well. In the first round he mercilessly slapped his
compatriot Adams, the champion of the large knockout tournament in
Tilburg, the matches and Piket he undoubtedly has the same
intentions.

In the open tournament is a large contingent to find. Dutch Most of
them are in the first round of matches off and they can now try their
luck in this group. In addition, a number of promising youngsters
given a chance. Of them came only Grandmaster Paul van der Sterren and
young Friesian Mark van der Werft to startling results. They won, both

Anatoly Karpov IS WRONG RIGHT

DISTRICT SEA, Wednesday

Anatoly Karpov is still in the race. After his horrible fan in the
first match against American Christiansen, he spends the second lot to
know omen for a catastrophe. He defeated his opponent decisively, but
im to qualify for the third round of the Hoogovensmatches he must also
win a barrage.

Karpov did not have to get to avenge his defeat all the
stops. Christiansen had as always prepared an interesting variant. As
to the first turn, he was the one made to the game, even though he was
black. In the early middle game and he even sacrificed quality
item. This was not bad, because black was given in exchange for the
material a beautiful center. His mistake was that he wanted to make
the material back soon. Then he seemed to have a chance of that, he
does not. Reconsidered. Karpov had however vicious put between them
and won the lady. The slot game cost the Russian experience no
difficulty.

After this boost Karpov, who first placed, must today harass opponents
in batches with a half hour grace period per person.  There is still
no winner after two meetings then is played according to the 'sudden
death' principle. A big disappointment is the fact that the last
remaining Dutch knockout matches must leave now. Jeroen Piket did not
make. Been disadvantaged by Julian Hodgson undo He can now continue to
play in the open tournament, even though it is already started. He
comes in with a half point.

Restoring Timman - after three weak played games - had announced the
previous round already. Solid game, better concentration. Nor the
collapse of Short came unexpectedly. The long Briton feels put under
pressure. Last year, in Linares, he had nothing to lose, and he was
honored that Karpov had put to bring him out. Equilibrium a
psychiatrist in the front row Now he blunders in the third and fourth
party maneuvered by Timmans in the favorite role. That's him far less
well off.

Anatoly Karpov, the former world chess champion, finds the level of
the final of the Candidates Match between Nigel Short and Jan Timman
abysmal. Last night he said in a TV interview that both of them
neither party will be for world champion Kasparov in this form.

Karpov is especially considering that both chess players preparations
of their visits took place not properly. "I think it's very bad what
is happening in Spain. Childish mistakes are made. Often in simple
statements. Incomprehensible. Should another XX or Timman arise that
would have a chance against Kasparaov. Failure to do so they will be
crushed and the finals are very one-sided."

Spanje gebeurt. Er worden kinderlijke fouten gemaakt. Vaak in
eenvoudige stellingen. Onbegrijpelijk.

KARPOV HAS LONGEST BREATH

WIJK AAN ZEE, Thursday The aim is tense, but it's the little Russian
finally succeeded. Four additional parties were needed, but ultimately
proved to have Karpov. Most stamina He could move on to the third
round of the Hoogovens Matches.

Initially it seemed that Karpov would have with Larry Christiansen,
his American opponent. No effort in the half-uurpartijen (half hour
games) Karpov won the first game easily in the jump. As a result, he
could simply trade-offs all the pieces in the second game. That's what
he did, but it did not draw him on. Uneven runners gave the American
attack opportunities. In a regular game Karpov probably had the state
know to keep, but now he was like a child under.

Therefore it was necessary to play by the sudden death
principle. Blitz In order to increase the tension of the players made
the first draw. All other players and spectators when their eyes
focused on the kernphanen during the fourth jump-off party. Karpov was
stiff with tension. While thinking he muttered variants himself and he
nodded his head, as if to say that it went well the public. And so it
was. Karpov withstood an attack with brilliance, then put the sheep on
dry land.

The Belarusian Gelfand will have proposed. More of his stay in Wijk
aan Zee He was placed second. However, there is little to say about
his elimination. In the first barrage party Gelfand was raised by the
amazing technology of the Spaniard and the second Illescas defended
itself particularly well. In the open tournament begins only drawing
in the battle to come. Dane Lars Bo Hansen is ample lead with a
perfect score. Regarding the Dutch falls mainly on Friso Nijboer. He
is a master, but scored a few weeks ago, his second GM norm. He is
following his victory over Ilya Smirin on track for a third and final
norm. The brand new Grand Master Louk van Wely is equivalent to
him. He knew his success in the second round when he defeated Van der
Wiel, not to extend.

Karpov has to go to extreme

Wijk aan Zee, Friday

Some already claim that deliberately puts himself in trouble, so he
always at the center of the spotlight. Fact is, and anyway that
Anatoly Karpov every day guarantees unnerving scenes.

In the third round of the Hoogovens matches he had to play against
John Nunn, who has won the tournament twice. Karpov usually does not
have much trouble with the Englishman, but this time was different. To
hedge against poor results in Karpov has been a few times sounded why.

"If you once have a bad day, you're out. You have no chance to make
your wrongs right," said Karpov. The system brings therefore tensions
with it and here Karpov was visibly affected. He chose be the right
turn after he had set up with a sharp Sämisch variation of the
king-indian, game, but it took him an awful lot of time. Even when he
had only fifteen minutes on the clock froze twenty moves, he was
unable to perform the tempo.

Finally he had to do in fifteen minutes. Nunn was then just sit back
quietly watching as he would beat his opponent. But if he thought
Karpov in easy jokes would Gardens, he was disappointed. How little
time he had, Karpov avoided the pitfalls and even managed to pick
up. one full point within

Spaniard Illescas revelation in Wijk aan Zee

Wijk Aan Zee, Saturday

The second game is out of the third round, ie the quarterfinals of the
Blast Furnace-match tournament. So there were only eight men behind
the boards and four of them are going through. it is exciting and the
surprises are not from the air. Until now, the game of the Spaniard
Illescas most stands out in a positive way. He had already won the
first batch of Hodgson and now had white in the second game. That was
a neat strategic lesson with at the end a nice flame job.

A short side, 24 put with only lady catch to lock. Really, Illescas
has show a lot, also yesterday, and they like him quiet (and that
would previously have been a very bold prediction are eds.) ranks
among the favorites for the overall victory.

The latter four are at least three Russians, and one of them is called
Anatoly Karpov. From John Nunn, the former world champion played a
little excited and came with black playing does not really come under
pressure. The Russian had a heavy defend tion performance in prospect,
when Nunn suddenly let go of all its benefits. With a bang A funny
blunder, but one that truly points on middle division brought on
board. Suddenly it was all gone and sat Karpov advantage in an endgame
that he really could not lose. I feel sorry slightly for Nunn, as this
whole tournament proceeds died slightly for the English. Adams has
already descended into the open tournament and Nunn is now also out,
as Hodgson.

Particularly significant was the game was proceeding at Lobron-Salov
and Shirov-Oll. The Germans tried to acquire against Valery Salov
advantage of all the power because he needed to get to the jump to
penetrate. The whole point It was a party, in which opportunities and
opportunities to more or less offset each other. In the final position
Black had a strong bishop pair, and white two equally powerful
horses. it had an extremely fascinating struggle can continue, if
Lobron not made about the blunder of the tournament on the 31st
move. He just gave a whole tower away with something that we do not
even have a trap should not dare mention. Just awful, and in broad
daylight, with four minutes thinking. Inexplicable and sad.

In the open group, the victory of John van der Wiel with black on the
strong Sokolov should definitely be mentioned. The Bosniak was on all
sides been sacrificed. The party itself was a feast for the
eyes. Reinderman won happiness of the Belgian Winants, Van Wely drew
his quiet and Van der Sterren won fine of Smirin. Furthermore Korchnoi
bucked a fairly rapid draw against Gelfand.

IIIescas shows flair

DISTRICT SEA, Monday

Spaniard Miguel Illescas is without a doubt the most prominent member
of the Hoogovens matches. The new formula has the potential younger
players to flourish than the old guard. Hotter Just look at the
Englishman Michael Adams, who last year won two of these
uitschakelfestijnen. And now look at the remaining four in the final
elimination race that called Hoogovens in 1993. An old man (40 'there
Karpov), a young but not very young (Salov) and young Illescas and
Oll.

Lambit Oll has also shone and has come much further than many of his
more famous colleagues. However, the young Russian 0ll went with gusto
down against Illescas. The flare was in Illescas, undergoing at
0ll. Spaniard demonstrated in the press room after his party (as he
already did, because from the beginning he scores beautiful and
strong) and so one could see him this time especially with positional
funds had gone. proceed 0ll, provided no small tactician, had no
chance whatsoever bring forth the magic and was tagged in 39 put.

Anatoly Karpov see it all, but not entirely peaceful. He had a hard
time with black. Against Salov A double-tower endgame proved very well
stand for Valeri initially. However, Karpov decided not to want to
lose, went with his towers on the A-line stand and made twenty putting
marking time. When Salov acquiesced in the inevitable and the party
was given a draw. Today should indicate who these four falls off. The
finale is near.

Only 'young dog may still lie Karpov

DISTRICT SEA, dinsdagDe old hand and the young dog will decide who
will win Matches Hoogovens in 1993. Together we can no longer speak of
a real surprise, but what Miguel Illescas has shown here in Wijk aan
Zee is indeed strong and convincing.

He just won again in Oll, and thus he was the first to qualify for the
finals starting tomorrow, which covers four parties. Maybe there is a
throne or so for men is made for now are the finalists of the matches
just between the players of the open tournament.

Spotlessly Illescas' victory this time, but the wrinkles that had his
victory in the forehead of some attracted to the blunder that Oll did
not and weaknesses in the game from the Spaniard. With black playing
he treated the Sicilian defense original and inventive. He came,
according to some, even very good, from the opening, and then did it
less. Oll was given ample opportunity to level the score, perhaps was
even better at some point. However, when he made his blunder was
actually turned the tide again. And so the conclusion remains: a
totally deserved placement for Illescas, balanced, strong and nice
young player.

He will be facing Anatoly Karpov, the old hand. Karpov has then
perhaps not beautiful or by twenty could play. A polished victory. And
who is going to do now, who wins now? Presumably yet again Karpov. He
thus shows - after Moscow - that his role in the chess world is not
yet played out in 1993 and future years. Far from it.

show, check out his career in Wijk aan Zee, he may have even been
lucky, but he is yet again. Certainly, in his first and second
appearance he was hit and he could lose. He could be out, but he is
not coming out. As he restrained Salov yesterday was actually like in
his best days. It was such a party position in which the pressure
still increasing. First there is nothing wrong, then White is slightly
better, the ladies are quickly exchanged and that endgame torn Karpov
than irresistible and unstoppable on. So it was yesterday and it was a
miracle that Salov a move in the open tournament actually still very
good news from the patriotic front. It is a very strong tournament
(partly because all the losers from the Matches have been incorporated
in one place) and what we saw yesterday was pleasing. Piket won
strong and fairly quickly from none other than Nikolic.  Van der Wiel
had with black against Shirov also a great day and well into the
evening trying to bring its totals. (Quality) expressed Nijboer and
did pretty. He was flying again in time trouble, but still managed to
draw. Sharing a point against Akopian

Michael Adams remains in this group in the lead, and becoming
clearer. He won quick and sure Kortsjnoj, with black still. Remarkable
was also the victory of the thirteen-year-old Hungarian Peter Leko
Gert-Jan de Boer. Not so much the outcome, but rather the way in which
it was obtained. The small Hungarian (it really is just a boy) turned
out an awful lot to have seen that De Boer's initial impression ("I
could have won in one move") had to take back and had to admit that
he, in all cases had to fight for a draw.

PIKET sneaks into the TOP

DISTRICT SEA, Wednesday

In opening tournament of the Blast Furnace tournament is drawing in
the state. A drawing, which is pleasant appearance for the
Netherlands. Pretty fun, that - after the rapid elimination of most
Dutch in the matches and news from Spain - again something to say is
really good too. The good news is especially Jeroen Piket. He
unobtrusively found his niche, and is now engaged in a very striking
rise to the top. Better yet, he is already at the top.

Yesterday was a big day for him. Profit with black against John Nunn
is - anyway fought - always a performance, you can just tar. His rival
for first place was Michael Adams, who did not break inserted, but
constantly playing against compatriots and still does not go beyond
the division points. Yesterday he had white against the imaginative
Juhan Hodgson. This man gives round after round color to the
tournament, with its cheerful unadorned game, full of surprising
discoveries and full opening of the mode "for the devil is not
afraid." He is a half point behind, along with a number of contenders.

He now has 3.5 points from seven games. Friso Nijboer, the future
master is doing good, but not excellent. His perpetual torture-time
trouble making both his opponent and himself, of course, extremely
nervous, but often do not spend more than one division trigger

obviously heavy caliber. Paul van der Sterren had the worst of it, and
is doing a lot to fall back. Mark Yard experience a tournament like

ILLESCAS KARPOV AND SHARING THE POINT

DISTRICT SEA, Thursday

It was the loneliest day so far in the coastal village where the 5th
Blast Furnace-toernoornu been raging for two weeks. In the open group,
it was a day of rest and the matches are getting closer to the
final. The first game in a series of four between Miguel Illescas and
Anatoly Karpov.

The Spaniard had white and should naturally high and wide satisfied
and lucky with the fact that he has been so far. Match four matches
against Karpov ... that few have played chess. But perhaps there is
still more. The Spaniard started with a quiet game, which Karpov put
his bishop on b 4 and traded against the horse c 3. A trench battle
was a long time, until his center pawns Karpov began to
play. Possibilities of bitter battles were in it, but more remained in
the margins.

Actually, it was a quiet and proper pot, in which the two finalists
each other's forces have well explored, but that in no time the
balance was broken. First party so a draw and we eagerly await how it
goes. It gives us the opportunity of to just point to the promotion
group of the decathlon. Plays a number of very strong players to
be. Law next year placed in the open tournament The Beverwijker Harmen
Jonkman's seventeen years, from his earliest childhood brought up
professional chess player and now seems to be to break through. He won
yesterday with an exquisite black party brother Nikolic and

• Karpov ... quiet start ... is fully and provisionally solidly in the

Karpov knows not to charm audiences

WIJK AAN ZEE, Friday

CHESS our special reporters

The final of the Hoogovens Matches is completely overshadowed by the
open tournament. Only a few people are interested in one boring game
of the finalists, among all the most interesting grandmaster games in
the lower group. Karpov was long the crowd, but now he has cleared all
obstacles and for the prize of the Hoogovens Tournament fights with
his opponent Illescas from Spain, he is no longer able to entertain
the audience.

His form has returned and he walks very calm around. It even seems
that during the round more with the party between Timman and Short
dealing then with his own. The spectators are curiously victim. Karpov
will not breakneck complications more on his plate, but plays back its
own kind of chess: solid and accurate. In the second game of the
finals, he rolled in the proper style effortlessly opponent Miguel
Illescas on. The young Spaniard was able to stretch his lead to the
61st move, but halfway through the game it was clear that he could not
avoid defeat. Karpov had small means Meran defense being ground.

In the open tournament again dropouts arrived at the matches.  It goes
on the Est Lembit Oll and Russian Valery Salov. They received 5 1/2
points assigned and so immediately came to the third place
correctly. Because they both won, they are now even at the top. Salov
defeated Michael Adams at breakneck speed and this would be very
frustrating for the Englishman. He does because from the start it in
the open and has taken the lead with great difficulty. He then
subsequently so defeated and overtaken by a new entry in its first
batch. Nevertheless, this system is certainly not illogical. Salov
must finally be rewarded for the fact that he has achieved, while
Adams was out there after the first round. Semifinals matches

The same story applies to Oll, the Belarus Gelfand pointed
back. Gelfand is not his favorite, and had no chance against the
tactician. The Estonian has many niei make themselves heard, since his
childhood because he plays very little to the west. Yet he has become
a very strong player, as evidenced by his performance in this
tournament. Besides Salov he must also share the lead with Englishman
Hodgson and Jeroen Piket.

Finale, tweede partij:
    Karpov (Rus) - Illescas (Spa) 1 -O (eerste partij 1/2 - 1/2).

The 55th Hoogovens Chess Tournament is set up differently than the
previous ones. It has been chosen for the so-called knock-out system
that last year's experience gained in the Interpolisttoernooi
Tilburg. There is a major improvement made, because the players who
lose weight need not go straight home to go back. They will play in
the open tournament where a grand prize of f 8,000 is available

Nevertheless, especially the top players strong objections to this approach. The biggest drawback is that luck plays a big role too, because one mistake can be, because the players only play two matches against each other. Barely made good Is there no decision must be gevlug stationed; First 45 minutes per game, after only five. Ex-world champion Anatoly Karpov camp ions in Tilburg was already eliminated in the first round and in Wijk aan Zee came to him almost the same. He shot at the American Christiansen in the second roonde (in the first round he was exempted) a terrible buck: [moves] black and gave up.

Succeeded Karpov time to recover, but not all five Dutch. Survived the first round Piket well as Van der Wiel, Nijboer, Van Wely and Van derSterren had to seek their fortune in the Open tournament.

The revelation of the Hoogovens tournament was the young Spanish
lawyer Miguel Illescas. Below we see him Landed off the famous Russian
grandmaster Boris.

Haije Kramer

Het 55ste Hoogovensschaaktoernooi is anders opgezet dan de
voorgaanden.

twee partijen tegen elkaar spelen.

Miguel Illescas. Hieronder zien we hem de beroemde Russische
grootmeester Boris Geland uitschakelen.

Karpov almost champion Hoogovens

WIJK AAN ZEE — Anatoly Karpov has sat on a draw enough to Hoogovens
Matches to write his name. The former world champion Friday came to a
point division with the Spaniard Illescas. After three parties in the
state finals is 2-1 in favor of the Russian grandmaster. With two laps
to enter the Russian chess Salov Est Oll and the ranking of the Open
Tournament. The best Dutch National Champion Piket is a defeat
dropped to fourth place. Main victim during the tenth round in Wijk
aan Zee was Hodgson, who went under white against Salov. A protected
passed pawn on black 3 h showed the Englishman fatal. Salov is the
main candidate for the final victory. He already won the championship
of the Soviet Union, an honor he had to share. Incidentally with
another master He also finished in Wijk aan Zee ever in the first
place. That happened with compatriot Gelfand, who Friday was one of
his bad days. The other candidate for the triumph Oll, which Piket
was an illusion. Half point of the leaders of the German

Anatoly Karpov A CLASS APART CHESS by Lex Jongsma

DISTRICT SEA, Monday

With patience Karpov passed his exam. "This is the 79th tournament
won," he said, beaming highlighting his victory in Hoogovens
matches. Seventy-nine! There is no world after can tell him that, and
there never will come again. Probably played Of course, it should Gari
Kasparov, if going through with chess.

Anatoly Karpov was the matches yet again class apart. All the famous
Spaniard immediately Illescas, the revelation of this tournament are
called after him. Saturday afternoon, yet he brought Anatoly to the
extreme, he had almost forced a jump. With a lag of 2-1, the Spaniard
began the heavy task with black Karpov win. But what he came close! He
won the opening (Merano), he won the beginning of the middle game, he
won a pawn and another. Plus two pawns and a settlement to an
endgame. Oh sure, it will be sometime before him. Won But Karpov
straightened his back, played at the very toughest further and
precisely in that distant endgame (by no means everyday situation that
black two edge pawns has a tower and a runner and white only a tower
and a horse), especially in the endgame Karpov was the last meter
unbeatable. And that's class again.

So these were the two heroes of the Hoogovens matches, the new
formula, which - has been met - anyway. I'm somewhat hesitant, because
this week always held at the enquêttes, the public in Wijk aan Zee,
scored the question "do you prefer the new formula over the old?"
about fifty percent. At least on the last day. The reason for this
reluctance of the public and also in the way the masters, who are off
to the matches take place in the open tournament of me. So they do not
there from the beginning of it, get a certain number of points that,
but actually still play another tournament. If there is anything else
can be found on then the new formula still met.

And who won that Open tournament? Valery Salov, another East
Blokker. He now lives in the West, but this award will always remain
the chess handle. He won deserved, he won convincingly enough and he
was in the last round Jeroen Piket hold. Well at bay If Jeroen had
won, he might still be able to share first prize. Itself

With Piket (which now shares the third prize) is called the Dutchman
who obtained the highest score in the Open tournament, but not the one
who has had the most success. That is without a doubt Friso Nijboer,
who also take this hearty congratulations right with his new
grandmaster title. He had to win in the last round of the super player
Sokolov, and he did so with courage, verve and conviction. Nijboer is
and remains primarily an attacking player and gave it also
demonstrated yesterday. He flew his opponent by the throat and was -
despite the leave of two better chances in the timescramble - the
pleasure that he could settle the matter to an endgame. An ending that
turned out to be. Playing some fine tempo nudges To the last remained
spectators in suspense about the outcome of this party and that's
chess zn zn best and most exciting.

There was a master result, scored by a Dutchman. That was in the
women's group, where Ilona Bos claimed this honor for himself. Let's
go back to the Open tournament: unobtrusive but highly finished the
German Lobron end up in second place, just above OU, Jeroen Piket and
Tukmakov. The latter had other plans, but he did not end up just to
break through the defense by Viktor Kortsjnoj Tukmakov was already
very strong and very dangerous process. Behind Kortsjnoj and Van der
Wiel shares a whole procession of foreigners (including the This time
something disappointing Gelfand) the eighth to thirteenth place.

In ten camps promoted to Hoogovens Open 1994 Harmen Jonkman
Beverwijker, who also only seventeen years old, and thus achieved a
formidable success.

Public opinion

nieuwe formule toch voldaan.

ANATOLI KARPOV EEN KLASSE APART SCHAKEN door Lex Jongsma

WIJK AAN ZEE, maandag

This year's event follows the format of recent years with a 32 player knockout
alongside an Open Tournament. When a player is eliminated from the knockout he
is assigned a score for the open and continues to play in that event.
The mini-matches are of the following format. Two standard timerate games
(40 moves in 2 hours followed by 20 in 1 followed by a half hour blitz finish.)
In the event of a tied match then a mini-match of two 30 minute per side games
is played, followed by as many 15 minute sudden death games as is needed to
provide a winner.
