Large Tournaments

This issue came up on <CG> the other day – just how many games do you need to allow in a collection in order to accommodate some of the larger tournaments, like Olympiads. The old limit was 450 games, which <chessgames> bumped up to 500 games to allow me to finish <Biel izt 1993>.

But I got to wondering, what should the limit be?

(Well, that is, if you have to impose a limit. Really the software/database shouldn’t explicitly impose such a limit. Practically, it should be memory or disk size, that really causes the limitation. But <CG> is a public site, and so has to avoid DoS type attacks – so some explicit limit needs to exist.)

Being a quantitative-guy (when I’m not being qualitative), I decided to investigate. So I fired up <SCID>, and loaded in <MillBase>.  There’s a ready-made feature, aka the <Tournament Window>, that allows me to see all the tournaments in the database. Furthermore, I can select on the number of games. Putting the filter on tournaments with 500 or more games I get the following list:

Date	Players	Games	Elo	Site: Event	Winner

So, it appears that it’s not so uncommon to have more than 500 games in a tournament (there are 50 such tournaments), and that the largest tournament currently in has 2001 games in it.

Another thing to note is that such large tournaments appear to be a recent phenomena – starting from 2008. Why that is, I can only speculate, at the moment.
