Subotica (1987) – Carolus corrections

So, after much help on the <CG>‘s Biographer Bistro (especially from <Tabanus>, <PaintMyDragon> and <Retireborn>) I’ve managed to determine the round dates and correct rounds for all the games.

It turns out that three games in <Carolus> pgn had the wrong round numbers:

<Speelman--Zapata>  R14 -> R2
<Speelman--Xu>      R2  -> R15
<Ernst--Popovic>    R8  -> R6

It can be a little confusing, because Kavalek actually had a bye (due to Huebner’s dropping out) in R6. Kavalek played a final game in R7 before he also dropped out. Since two players dropped out, most of rounds in the official tournament had two byes. All except R6, when the <Kavalek / Huebner> game was scheduled. Dropping that pairing, means all the other players were paired. So R6 is the only round without a bye.

When I first put the corrections in place (again, especial thanks to <PmD> for digging out the early round pairings of a few critical games), I thought it was wrong to have all the players paired. I was confused for a little while, especially because my first instinct was to try to shuffle the other games around. Of course that can’t be done, and leads to more confusion. It was only after I left it alone for a bit and came back to it that it became obvious.

Well, enough on that, let’s see the results. Here is a Swiss xtab for the official tournament results – i.e. without Kavalek:

A couple of notes should be mentioned. First, the ratings are from the January 1987 FIDE listing, and reflect the tremendous good work <Carolus> has done in preparing the tournament data. I am mirroring his work, and have keep my modifications to a minimum for this release (i.e. Cespedes vs Cepedes, etc).

Next, I’ve tried to accurately reflect the country and titles of the players at the time of the tournament. I can do this because of newspaper reports, and also because <OlimpBase> publishes the archived versions of the FIDE ratings (yes, on faded scaned images – but the information is there). So using this data I can hand correct the SCID output.  Note that Hamed became a Master  in the July 1987 ratings list (I’m not sure if FIDE used the term International Master in 1987). Also, Xu and Ernst would both later become Grandmasters. But at the time of the start of the tournament, I believe both Xu and Hamed were untitled and Ernst was still a Master.

(See http://www.olimpbase.org/Elo/Elo198701e.html )

I utilized <PmD>‘s data to add the Category 11 info in the header,  as well. Lastly, note that SCID automatically calculates the performance ratings given the ELO data inside the PGN.

And here is the table of progressive scores, round by round (again, omitting Kavalek):

I apologize for it being so large that horizontal scrolling is needed, but what can one do? I’ve marked the bye rounds in green. E.g. neither Chernin nor Alburt lost in R1, and Ribli had the misfortune of having a last round bye. Also note the very strong finish by Sax, moving from 6th place in R13, to tie 1-3 in the end, by winning his last four straight games.

To finish the post, I show the above table, exactly the same, except sorted by player name. Then I’ll show the Swiss standing xtab as before, but with Kavalek’s games recorded (again, those games were nullified in the official result).
