Biel Interzonal (1985) – Round Dates – Working Notes

[Notes not completely formatted, stop by later if you would]

Extensive research notes, largely based on the Dutch newspaper research tool, Delpher:

http://www.delpher.nl/nl/kranten/results?query=biel&page=1&maxperpage=50&sortfield=date&cql[]=%28date+_gte_+%2201-07-1985%22%29&cql[]=%28date+_lte_+%2201-08-1985%22%29&cql[]=ppn+any+%28832675288%29&coll=ddd

(The above is a ample search to use as a beginning point.)

When reading the following notes, be aware you might need to scroll horizontally to see a complete line. The notes themselves are largely an interweaving of google translation of Dutch newspapers, and the output of a python program I use for round reports and leaderboards (derived from a SCID Swiss xtab for the tournament, using Carolus’ PGN):

BIEL, Monday - John van der Wiel has his party in the tenth round in the
inter-zone chess against the Swede Ulf Andersson Biel ended
draw. Leiden master wielding the white pieces. Andersson points for
sharing an ordinary expectation. The fragile Swede decided all parties prior
to the sharing of the point.

By this result, Van der Wiel still in second place. The Dutchman:
half a point behind leaders Vaganjan.

Leader Rafael Vaganajan also played a draw necessarily against his
compatriot Sokolov, national champion in 1984 from the Soviet
Union. Conveniently for Van der Wiel was the defeat in 42 put the
American Seirawan against Poloegajevski.

The Spaniard Martin and the Argentinian Quinteros agreed in the
inter-zone tournament Biel draw. The meeting was adjourned games from
the sixteenth round. Both chess players play no significant role in
the battle for the top places. The organizers in Biel take seriously
into account that there will be after the tournament herkamp
(recampment) with two or three players. In this case the extension
Sunday will already start in a smaller room of the Congress in
Biel. The hall has already been discussed by the organization. The
score is:

 1. Vaganjan (Sow) 11 1/2 pts,

Short seizes chance against Van der Wiel

BIEL, Friday - John van der Wiel will be an additional way series with Briton
Nigel Short and Eugenio Torre of the Philippines must decide which player
finishes fourth in the interzonal chess tournament Biel. That place
gives right to participate in the candidates tournament, which begins
mid-October in Montpellier. The Soviet Russians Vaganjan and Sokolov
and the American Seirawan Biel qualified directly for the candidates
tournament.

The triathlon, which begins Saturday in Biel, has become necessary
because Van der Wiel yesterday with black in the seventeenth and final
round was defeated by Short. Moreover lost Torre, also with black, the
Hungarian Gyula Sax. Therefore ended Van der Wiel, Torre and Short
with 10.5 points in the fourth place. Van der Wiel undoubtedly begins
with the courage of despair to the extension. He had, after all, a
relatively easy program in the final week, long time good views to
place himself directly for the candidates tournament. The expected
profit parties against the Icelander Petursson and especially against
the weak Swiss Partos failed to materialize. Van der Wiel had to be
satisfied both times with draws. In his last match against the former
prodigy Short had Leidener half a point sufficient for qualification
as competitor Torre Sax lost. However short smoke his chance of a
renewal and defeated Van der Wiel so he still in the race remained in
one place for Montpellier. In the tournament lost Van der Wiel
calculated from Short and Torre and furthermore Vaganjan, who finished
first with a point ahead Seirawan. He won seven times, Martin,
Poloegajevski, Quinteros, Sokolov, Sax, Jansa and Gutman and also
played seven times a draw.
