This tournament was organized by the newly formed British Chess Association as part of their 2nd annual Congress. The previous years’ tournament had been successful enough to allow this one to be more heavily promoted, and it was in fact often referred to as the International Tournament in the literature of the time.

Some major talent took part, so I was surprised to find so few of the tournament games have found their way into the chess databases of today. This includes not only <CG>, but also <Chessbase> and <NIC>.

Luckily, the tournament was fairly well covered by the contemporaneous press, and many games found their way not only into the newspapers of the day, but also periodicals like BCM, Chess Monthly and the like (e.g. DSZ). Moreover, several of the players published autobiographies (or memorandums) of their games, yielding additional games for Blackburne, Pollock, etc.

Finally, some of the best historians of today have found dug out many of the games for the biographies of some of the stronger players (Forster/Burns, Davies/Lipschutz, and Harding/Blackburne).

I utilized all of the above sources to collect about ~36 of the tournament games (roughly half), plus 3/4 of the playoff games. Sadly, not all the games are available, though Gillam has assembled the most complete collection thus far. I haven’t been able to benefit from his source, thus far.

The following is a “work-in-progress”. I expect, from a generous offer by a fellow <CG> member, to garner additional games from Gillam’s source. Moreover, I haven’t begun using the contemporaneous newspaper resources as yet, either.  Nonetheless, here is the progress report:

Note that, thanks to, or at least, according to, Davies and Harding, all the known games for Blackburne and Lipschutz have been assembled. The missing entries are supposedly missing games. (Of course, looking for these games is advisable, but it should be a low priority, as it’s rather unlikely to be a successful search).

  1. Z, I can confirm the pgn is downloadable and can be read by Chessbase. There seems to be some sort of glitch with the first(?) of the 83 games which makes it unreadable; Bird v Burn is the first game that can be read.
