Fifty Tournaments by G. Reichhelm (1898 prespective)

Update: 2016.07.04Reichhelm’s Fifty Tournaments:   Z-base-v04  (53 tournaments, 1851-1898)

The following is a useful list of the fifty earliest important tournaments in  chess history, or at least the part that was recorded adequately enough that the tournaments can be usefully reconstructed, if not conveyed in their entirety. It comes an article published in this source:

<ACM v2 (Jul 1898-Feb 1899) p120-123/127-130>   (ACM = American Chess Magazine)

Written by G. Reichhelm, a well known chess editor of the Philadelphia Times and contributor to the ACM., it’s an article has informed my recent efforts at tournament reconstruction. I intend to fully research and reconstruct all 50 of these tournaments over the upcoming year. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do more. And, if I can gain qualified collaborators, possibly many more.

Another, slightly revised edition was published by Reichhelm in “Chess in Philadelphia  (1898) p141“:

https://books.google.com/books?id=LjYWAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA141&lpg=PA141#v=onepage&q&f=false

When I originally wrote this article, I had progressed as far as the completion of <Bristol (1861)>, i..e. the firstl ten tournaments. By “processed”,  I mean as fully researched  and as completely recorded as the historical record allows. Basically, the project is to incrementally build a PGN version of each tournament on Reichhelm’s  list which follows immediately below, using the existing games, or, if games are missing, then using stubs, to recreate complete and accurate crosstables and leaderboards.

Later I will supply a link to Z-base, the public version of this project. However, this list will be processed first, as the proper packaging of the PGN requires additional work which can only be done after a tournament is processed here. The table below is accurate only up to the last processed tournament, and will be updated frequently as work proceeds. In other words, please check back often.

(Note: when verified as correct the heading is made boldface – processed to #15 –  Philadelphia (1871). Also, when Reichhelm says games he is referring to Games/player or rounds, in modern parlance.

Update: 2016.07.04 – Happy July 4th y’all — all 50 tournaments have now been preliminarily processed)

FIFTY TOURNAMENTS By G. Reichhelm

The Cologne Chess Congress just concluded makes the fiftieth of the
more important tournaments which have excited international interest
This kind of contest has been most productive in developing new chess
talent and from the first tourney to the last many masters like
Anderssen in 1851, Morphy in 1857, Steinitz in 1873, Zukertort in
1878, Tarrasch in 1889, Lasker in 1891, Pillsbury in 1895 -- owe the
introduction of their full powers to this species of chess.

The following tables present a record of the fifty tourneys in the
most concise form compatible with complete information. The Roman
numerals represent the prizes and the brackets cover the ties. The
first six contests are knockout, where players were paired for
matches, the losers dropping out and there it is necessary to give
losses as well as wins, but with the tournament of 1862 the modern
system starts and the losses are arrived at by subtracting the wins
from the number of games to be played. Thus Anderssen in 1862 won 12
but he must have lost 1 as he had 13 games to play. Over two hundred
players are represented.
