Hereford (1885) – 1st CCA International Tournament


11-player RR⁽¹⁾     Aug 4-12th, 1885   at the Green Dragon (Hotel), Hereford ENG.

Time Control:  15 moves/hour⁽²⁾, sealed envelop adjournments.  

Playing sessions:  Up to two sessions/day, begun at 10:30 am and 7 pm.  No play on Sundays.

Entrance Fee: £2   Prizes: £60, 25, 15, 10 + £3 3s (CCA member) + various consultation prizes.

Prize Winners:   Blackburne, ( Bird, Schallopp )⁽³⁾,  Mackenzie + Skipworth.

   (1) Tarrasch was originally scheduled to play, but cancelled, supposedly because of the unequal distribution of prize money.
   (2) The tournament rules adopted mostly followed London (1883).
   (3)  Bird and Schallopp split a two-game playoff, and thus equally split 2nd+3rd prizes.
   (4)  “The Book of the Counties’ Chess Association” A.B. Skipworth (1886-)  96pp (Not all games are included/complete).

Bird--Schallopp 2nd-3rd playoff.

G-1 Schallopp--Bird, Sicilian, Bird losing.

                     Schallopp could give perpetual and win prize, but
                     felt he had winning position. Instead Schallopp
                     ultimately lost, and 2+3 prize were shared.
