London (1851) – a first look

This is a very preliminary look… only the upcoming Z-base PGN is given at the moment – hopefully for with all the bugs worked out:

PGN version with dates (as best as can be determined from ILN):  London (1851) – w dates.pgn

Actually, this was rushed out in the hope of bug-checking help. I’ll swing back with the, by-now, more standard treatment at some point in the future.

At the moment, let’s show the worksheet I used to patch the various online DB’s against the two versions of the tournament book (Staunton’s and Anderssen’s (the latter is perhaps more accurate for the Staunton // Anderssen match games).
First the comparison of the current CG snapshot vs. the Jan 2016 snapshot I originally used for Z-base’s initial release:

==========================================================================
London (1851)
==========================================================================
CG - old snapshot (~2016.01) vs new snapshot (~2016.06)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? C44 23 (R4.5) 0-1 Kennedy -- Szen

21...Rae8 vs 21...Rab8; Note - the move 21...Rae8 is correct, and was
                           found by
                           http://www.chessgames.com/perl/kibitzing?kid=G1001364&reply=1
                            is wrong.

TB G-20 p172/271 21...Q. R. to K's sq.
TB (de) G-20 p98/122 21...Ta8-b8
DSZ v7 G-20 p266/288 21...Ta8-b8

CG is alone, wrong... CB/NIC/365 all agree with 21...Rae8.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? B44 64 (R1.1) 1-0 Szen -- Newham

Tpos 30...Bxf4+, 31...Rxf4; CG (new) is right (according to TB)

TB G-18 p32/131 30... R. takes P.
TB (de) G-18 p18/42 30... Tf8-f4:

CG(old)/CB/365 are wrong, with 30...Bxf4; NIC/CG(new) have correct 30...Rxf4.

Note: NIC gives Newham as Newham, William Leighton
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? A21 60 (R1.2) 1-0 Kennedy -- Mayet

59.Rg7 vs 59.g7; CG(new) is right (according to TB(de))

TB G-20 p35/134 (prematurely ends after Black's 42th)
TB(de) G-20 p20/44 59.g6-g7

CG(old)/CB are both wrong with 59.Rg7, NIC ends at move 42... only CG(new) is right.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

 1851.??.?? B44 30 (R2.6) 0-1 Szen -- Anderssen

25...Rxb2 vs 25...Re4; CG(new) is right (according to TB)

TB G-6 p48/147 25... R. to K's 5th . (*)The correct move. White is now bereft of nearly all resource.
 TB(de) G-6 p26/50 25... Tb4–e4

CG(new) stands alone right... CG(old)/CG/NIC/365 are all wrong with 25...Rxb2
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, the comparison of the current CG snapshot vs. 365:

==========================================================================
London (1851)
==========================================================================
CG - new snapshot vs 365 (omitting previous discrepancies)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? A13 36 (R3.6) 1-0 Wyvill -- Williams

35...bxa4 vs 35...bxc4; CG is wrong (according to TB)

TB G-6 p105/204 35... P. takes Q. B. P.
TB (de) G-6 p62/86 35... b4-a5:

CG stands alone, wrong... CB/NIC/365 all have 35...bxc4
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? A10 54 (R1.1) = Horwitz -- Bird

4...Nh6 vs 4...Nf6; CG is right (TB).

TB G-3 p4/103 4... Kt. to K. R's 3rd.
TB(de) G-3 p3/27 4... Sg8–f6

CG/NIC are right w 4...Nh6 ... CB/365 are wrong with 4...Nf6.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? C42 50 (R1.2) 0-1 Williams -- Loewenthal

24...Re4 vs 24...Re5; CG is right, 24...Re5 is absurd, must be error

TB G-15 p25/124 24... R. to K's 5th.
TB(de) G-15 p15/39 24... Te1-e5

CG/NIC are right with 24...Re4 ... CB/365 are wrong with 24...Re5
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? C01 42 (R2.1) 1-0 Anderssen -- Szen

13...Qd6 vs 13...Qe6; Again, CG is right and 13...Qe6 is absurd.

TB G-1 p38/137 13... Q. to Q's 3rd.
TB(de) G-1 p21/45 13... De7–d6

CG/NIC are right... CB/365 have 13...Qe6 which hangs Bb5.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? B21 52 (R2.2) 0-1 Horwitz -- Staunton

51.Rc1 vs 51.Rg8; CG is right (TB - move is even footnoted)

TB G-16 p75/174 51. Q. R. to Q. B's sq*
TB(de) G-16 p44/68 51. Tg8–g1

(Note: Difficult to read German version, in algebraic but reverses
board numbering because the colors are reversed!)

NIC/CG agree, and are right... CB/365 have the wrong 51.Rg8.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? B30 38 (R2.3) 1-0 Williams -- Mucklow

17.Qe2 vs 17.Qd2;

TB G-24 p92/191 17. Q. to K's 2nd.
TB(de) G-24 p55/79 17. Dd1–e2

CG/NIC are both right... CB/365 are wrong with 17.Qd2
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? C50 47 (R3.2) 0-1 Staunton -- Anderssen

Missing moves... 48.Bg8 Qg3+; CG is wrong (TB(de))

TB G-9 p111/210 ends after 47... 47. Kt. to K's 5th. (The coup de grace.)
TB(de) G-9 p68/92 48. Le6–g8 Dh4–g3+

CG/NIC are wrong, missing finish... CB/365 have xtra moves
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? D32 50 (R4.2) = Wyvill -- Anderssen

16...Ne4 vs 16...Nd5; CG is right (TB).

TB G-2 p134/233 16... Kt. to K's 5th. (It seems, at first view, impossible for Black to avoid
the loss of a Piece at this crisis. Yet Mr. W. contrives to
escape, not only without loss, but with the advantage of
                                               position.)
TB(de) G-2 p80/104 16... Sf3–e5

(Note again that TB(de) uses odd algebraic notation since the colors are reversed)

CG/NIC are right... CB/(NIC)/365 are wrong with 16...N-d5.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? D32 70 (R4.4) 1-0 Staunton -- Williams

13...Rad8 vs 13...Rab8; CG is right(TB).

TB G-11 p152/251; 13... 13. Q. R. to Q's sq.
TB(de) G-11 p88/112 13... Ta1–b1

CG/NIC are right... CB/365 both are wrong with 13...Rab8.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? B45 57 (R4.1) = Kennedy -- Szen

29.Rd1 vs 29.Re1; CG is wrong (TB) (29.Rd1 ends up being absurd)

TB G-16 p163/262 29. R. to K's sq.
TB(de) G-16 p94/118 29. Th1 – e1:

CG stands alone wrong... CB/NIC/365 all have 29.Re1.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1851.??.?? C65 59 (R1.2) 1-0 Bird -- Horwitz

25...Qf2 vs 25...Qb2; CG is right (corrected TB).

TB G-4 p6/105 25... Q. to Q B's 7th. (typo, must be K B's 7th)
TB(de) G-4 p4/28 25... Dd5–b7

CG/NIC are correct... CB/365 both wrong with 25...Qb2.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
