Smyslov’s RUSbase Tournament Record

RUSbase aside

A critical resource for those researching Russian chess history, especially those interested in games from the golden era of “Soviet Chess”, are well advised to consult RUSbase. It’s assumed various forms and sites in the early days of the internet, but has been consolidated and nicely formatted in one place currently:

http://al20102007.narod.ru/

I’ve made a complete SCID db mirror from a snapshot of the site on my local machine, which I refer to as RUSbase.

Smyslov’s Tournament Record on RUSbase

SCID has a very useful feature, known as the Tournament Finder, which can be used to explore the tournaments contained within a DB – provided, of course, that the DB is properly normalized, to some approximation. This precludes <CG>, but does include RUSbase – which is one of the better sources on the web (that is – if only they provided a single download of the entire DB).

Here’s a screenshot of SCID’s Tournament Finder in action:

I normally use the keyboard shortcut <Ctrl-Shift-T> to summon the Tournament Finder window, but there is a button on the toolbar (circled in red above), and the Windows->Tournament Finder menu button as well. The above screenshot shows one of the nice features of using the Tournament Finder – i.e. that any tournament’s xtab can be called up by right-clicking its row on the list.

The picture above is a little crowded, trying to demonstrate the xtab feature. The selected tournament is highlighted by SCID in yellow, and the xtab appears at the top of the viewing stack. Please note the control inputs at the bottom of the screen for the Tournament Finder window. The defaults were modified to display 500 tournaments (default 50), and the Player textbox is used to select only those tournaments where Smyslov participated.

I copied the text for the 96 tournaments found into a python program to reformat it. Normally, the fields are delimited by tabs, but I prefer spaces to ensure the columns line up. Additionally, the ELO-rating for the tournaments is omitted, since Smyslov’s play was mostly prior to 1970, before the ELO-rating came to dominate tournament classifications. Here then is a copy of RUSbase’s tournaments for Smyslov, courtesy of SCID (and z)…
