   (0)  At the time Kassa was part of Hungary, and known by this name in the English literature. In German it was known as
Kaschaus, and today is known as Košice SVK. Rudolf Charousek died in 1900-04-18.
   (1)  Originally Nimzowitsch was invited to play, but lacking needed travel permissions withdrew (see 1918-07-06 Baltische Zeitung
or Aron Nimzowitsch (Skjoldager, Nielsen) p264.
   (2)  Mieses, in his 15-game pamphlet Fünfzehn ausgewählte Partien des Schachmeister-turniers in Kaschau, gives the
start date as the 3rd, even though R1 was on the 5th.  Presumably because there was a drawing/dinner(?) before R1.

   (3)  DSZ v73 N7 (Jul 1918) p166-7.  The Chess Club sponsored the tournament, but the exact location of play isn’t given. The
opening ceremony was in Kassai Tärsaskör, Bercsenyiutca on the 3rd (followed by a meeting of the Hungarian Chess Federation).

   (4)  BCM v38 (Nov 1918) p337 and DSZ v73 (Sept 1918) p194.

From the BCM v38 (Nov 1918) p337 comes this RR xtab, sorted by standing:
(Careful, the Balla who won the minor tournament is different from the Balla in the master tournament)

This was perhaps the best tournament performance Reti ever had, going undefeated. Also, the tournament is significant for being the strongest, and most international, taking place during the war years. Finally, it was perhaps the last tournament to award its prize money in Austrian-Hungarian Kronens.

Here is a clip from DSZ showing the contemporaneous locations/residencies/nationalities of the participants:There was supposed to be a tournament book, written by Dr. Vécsey (cf. Adams-Breyer p474), but it never was published. The tournament itself received only limited coverage in foreign press, and many of the games have been lost. Out of 66 games, there are but 35 games, leaving 66-35 = 31 zero-length missing game stubs. And of the 35 games, 3 of those are really just opening variation stubs. This leaves the final tally with only 32 fully recorded games (well, fully recorded in the nominal sense – oftentimes games aren’t recording in full (e.g. “and White wins”, etc.)).
