5 thoughts on “Frankfort (1887) – A first-look look

  1. frankfurt, in fact — not “frankfort” … thanks for the service in providing all these valuable pgns, i’ve caught the bug as well and am diving into the sea of historical chess magazines and periodicals as well in an attempt to build a database with mostly annotated / commented tournaments and games.

the german national library in frankfurt is goldmine in that regard.

    • Actually, there can be an argument made for using Frankfort, anachronistic though it may be.

I used it primarily because I wanted to match the contemporaneous literature – which, for the English language periodicals of the time, used Frankfort. After all, so did Reichhelm, whose work actually inspired my original efforts.

(E.g. even Steinitz, as late as 1889, was still using Frankfort –

      https://books.google.com/books?id=fpYP7iUiHz8C&lpg=PA77&ots=6SOQx7QZzZ&dq=frankfort&pg=PA77#v=onepage&q=frankfort&f=false)

Of course, if reconsidering the effort, I’d likely be convinced to use the modern anglicized version – but I do like using historical names that don’t require updating as political fortunes, or modern styles, change. This can help searching in the original literature, fwiw. Maybe GPS coordinates should be included in the PGN (he asked, somewhat tongue-in-cheek).

Anyways, thanks for the comment, and it’s nice to hear you caught the PGN bug too.

      • while i understand the u.s. publications spelled the city’s name as “frankfort”, the original tournament publication is quite clear (i use primary sources whenever available) — tournament book scan (also available on google books):

        https://cv02.twirpx.net/2327/2327604.jpg?t=20171203072011

there’s a paragraph on the spelling in the wikipedia article as well:
“By the 19th century, the name Frankfurt had been established as the official spelling. The older English spelling of Frankfort is now rarely seen in reference to Frankfurt am Main, although more than a dozen other towns and cities, mainly in the United States, use this spelling (e.g., Frankfort, Kentucky; Frankfort, New York; Frankfort, Illinois).”

in the local dialect (frankfurt vernacular) the city’s name is in fact pronounced “frankfot” (“frahnkfod” — the “r” is silent), ironically enough — the settlers in the usa founded these towns and then used the spelling which was common pre-19th century.

being a frankfurt native, “frankfort” is just analogous to me as a spelling of, say “new yurk”.

anyway, if you’re interested, you can have a look at some of the additions/updates i made to the 1877 leipzig anderssen jubilee (this was the first tournament i’ve worked on), based on the pgn you provided here — sources are included in the file:

        https://www.sendspace.com/file/39f8r9

i checked for games played during the tournament, whether casual, matches, consultation, simuls or the like and inserted them into the respective sections. the main tournament file is still unfinished, as i need to unearth the complete names of the participants.

        cheers.

  2. and another add-on:
hathi download helper is highly recommended — it automatically downloads and merges the pdf files of digital scans into a single document — open source, super efficient, top notch! all you need to do is insert the link to the publication you want to download — it even picks a proxy for you if you’re outside the u.s., like me.
